“The purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.”

                                                                                                     Sydney J Harris

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Mayannur with a motto , ‘Come in to learn and go out to serve’,  is one of 590 JNVs run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of HRD, Dept. of School Education and Literacy, Govt. of India. The National Policy on Education 1986 called for ‘special emphasis on the removal of disparities and to equalize educational opportunity’. To achieve such a social integration, the policy called for expanding scholarships, incentives for poor families to send their children to school regularly, development of new institutions and providing housing and services etc. and the result was Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

JNV Mayannur in Thrissur Kerala  is a school in the lap of nature where learning becomes a recreation, a revelation and reality. Here we believe in some universal truths, like a “Education empowers a human being”. Education not only shapes the future but also helps a person to delve deep within and bring out the best one has to offer to the world. Keeping this thought at the core of our heart, we endeavour to make the dreams of our children come true. We provide the warm wind below their wings and sky becomes the only limit for them. The students of JNV Mayannur hail from the cultural city of Kerala and are highly talented in the field of art and culture. Here their innate talents are further honed and they are provided with various platforms to showcase their different art forms. Besides, these students do get platforms to perform and flourish in the fields of academics, sports and literary activities at national and international levels under the able guidance of the teachers. They are further nurtured with values, so that they develop good habits and grow in strength of character. We come out the boundary of ‘self’ and make an effort to equip them with multivalent competencies, effective skills so as to lead a dependent child to an independent child and then to an interdependent, fine and humble human being who works for the uplift of the people and the improvement of a society.

We have completed 30 years  of service in the field of education and feel proud to see our children serving the society, nation and the world as teachers, leaders, engineers, doctors, scientists, lawyers, sportsmen etc. but then this is not the end, rather the beginning of a journey- the journey of learning.  We know that we have ‘miles to go’. Here we JNV Mayannur family is inspired and stirred by the following lines of Robert Frost.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

But I have promises to keep.

And miles to go before I sleep

And miles to go before I sleep.
